NARI Certified Lead Carpenters (CLC®) are recognized as skilled field professionals who oversee all on-site aspects of a remodeling project — including personnel coordination, subcontractor management, scheduling, safety, and client relations — all while remaining actively engaged in hands-on work. The Certified Lead Carpenter (CLC®) Program focuses on the essential principles of effective, in-the-field project management:

Check if you're eligible

Before applying for CLC certification, assure you meet the following certification requirements:

  • Minimum of five (5) years continuous experience in the remodeling industry
  • Minimum of two (2) years in a Lead Carpenter role.

Online Preparatory Course

NARI offers a convenient, online, instructor-led certification preparatory course to help you advance your skill set and prepare for your certification exam alongside your peers from across the country.

Certification Process

Apply for certification

  • Submit an online certification application demonstrating compliance with the prerequisites of the CLC certification. Login required. 
  • You will be able to enroll in a preparatory course via the certification application.
  • Certification and preparatory course fees are due at the time of application.

All applications are carefully reviewed by NARI Certification staff to confirm eligibility.

Decide how to prepare for your exam

Before applying for certification, decide which of the following exam preparation paths fits your schedule and learning style:

  • CLC Online Certification Preparatory Course – Comprehensive, instructor-led, 8-week online class. Prep course enrollment will be offered during the application process and is not offered independently.
  • In-Person Local NARI Chapter Courses – Instructor-led, multi-week classes may be offered by select NARI chapters. Check your NARI chapter for availability.
  • Self-Study – Use the program study materials provided upon enrollment to prepare for the exam.

Take your certification exam

After certification enrollment and preparation, you must pass a 180-question, 3-hour, multiple-choice, online exam proctored by a live online proctor to ensure examination integrity. 

You have three attempts to pass your certification exam. Your first attempt is included in your initial certification fee, but a $50 retest fee applies for each additional attempt.

If you are unable to pass the exam within two years of enrollment and wish to continue pursuing certification, you must re-enroll in the program and pay the certification fee again.

Don't forget to renew your certification

Certification is an ongoing commitment. You must renew your certification annually prior to its expiration date.

CLC Renewal Requirements

  • 5 hours of continuing education (5 CEUs) earned within the 12 months preceding your certification expiration date.
  • Completion of the online CLC renewal application
  • Payment of your CLC certification renewal fee
